Chapter 7

“The bat shifters are in and Ancient Root headed out to talk to the jaguars,” Canopy informed me the moment I got back to camp. So much for my plan to find Seed. “There’s been a lot more going on with the cartels than we knew and the whole forest is—”

“Whoa.” I chuckled, holding up my hands in front of me. “Slow down and take a deep breath.” He was so wound up and excited. I didn’t know what would get him going like this. Probably the fact we were about to fight back when we were a passive tribe by nature. My son’s eyes were bright with the thrill of being involved.

He did as I wanted, breathing in slowly through his nose and letting it out through his mouth. I nodded for him to go ahead as I gestured that we should sit on the logs that was our central meeting area for the camp.

“I went with Ancient Root to see the bat shifters,” he explained and then gave me a wink. “Grandpa really has a thing for the leader.” I rolled my eyes. Everyone knew that. “Anyway, he was all fired up about stopping the cartels. The leader’s right-hand man’s son was taken by the cartel when he drifted away from the group and went to play in their stream.”

“Oh no,” I whispered in horror when I saw Canopy’s eyes fill with tears.

“They tortured the boy, Dad. The bat leader said there are some things words can’t describe and the horror they found left of the boy’s body was one of them.” Canopy took a few shaky breaths and pushed past his emotions, trying to stay focused. “The father went mad and walked right into the cartel’s camp and shifted. They saw him shift. They’re all freaked out and sending for reinforcements.

“Ancient Root feels that we must strike now before more come and find out the truth. He said if they find them dead from some strange poison that they’d assume the men who called were already sick.”

“He’s right,” I sighed as I rubbed my hands over my face, tired all the way to my toes over all of this. “It’s happened before when others have come into the forest. An explorer group witnessed me shift back once. We didn’t poison them, they ate something toxic. But it saved us when others came looking for them and read one of their journals. They assumed it was the sickness that killed the men and we were safe.”

“Okay, so what do we do now?” Canopy asked after letting me get lost in my thoughts for a few minutes.

“Spread the word that we are taking second guardian ranks for the next day.” Just as I thought, Canopy’s eyes went wide as saucers at the command. Second ranks meant that instead of our usual positions that we spread out more with half of the shift moving into camp for when they changed. Normally it was when there was a threat to the forest and we wanted to protect the saplings.
